Multi tier cat tree / cat condo

“I’m getting a new cat soon, and I want her/him to be happy while I’m away at work. I found this website  which has a ton of adorable cat furniture. Preferably from those of you who have purchased one of these things, do you recommend it? Do the cats actually take a liking to these things, and if so, what particular type of cat furniture would you recommend?”

We have a cat tree and our 4 cats love it. The first one fell to pieces (we bought a cheap one) through overuse. lol

Cat trees are a personal gift and not every cat likes the same thing. For that reason, no-one on here can tell you which one will be best for your cat, you really need to think about what your cat enjoys doing. What’s good for my cats, for example, might not be any good at all for your’s. Do its current owner have a cat tree? If so and they don’t need it any more, will they let you have it? If it’s a rescue cat, can the shelter staff advise on the sorts of things he/she likes to do?

For example, does it like scratching on a vertical or horizontal surface? If vertical, you need to make sure that it will still be high enough for him to use as a scratching post when he’s fully grown. Does it like climbing high? Does it like sitting and laying up high? Does it like hiding, so would it like a box? Some cats prefer toys which require a human to get involved and don’t like dangling toys they have to play with alone, so which does it prefer?

I’m sorry if this isn’t giving you with a simple answer, but every cat is different and has its own likes and dislikes. If you’re spending that sort of money you’d be best getting something the cat would love and use for many years to come.

Don’t bother shelling out more money for one that’s scented with catnip, as it’s easy to buy catnip sprays from any pet shop.

If I were buying one for my cats, I’d go for one where they can climb, be high up and hide/play in boxes, because that’s what they enjoy doing.

If you’re any good at DIY, it’s not that hard to make one. The benefits of doing this are the cost and also you can tailor-make it exactly to your cat’s requirements. Here are some websites with step-by-step instructions:

  1. A scratch post is worth every penny, it will save you alot of money on furniture! Try to get one with toys etc attached, they will love it! The ones on your link would be perfect, although you would only need one!

  2. They are if the cat actually uses them. A single kitten may not even use it, unless you put catnip on it or tease it with a toy fishing toy for awhile. I placed mine next to a window and they use it to sit and snooze on while looking outside.
You have a better chance that they will "play" on it if you have 2 kittens that can interact on it together.
Also it helps for them to have the scratching poles, but they will still scratch on other things as well. It is just what is nearby when they need to scratch. So place it in a central room where you will be alot or they will not use it for that to much. My cats seem to stay in the room I am in alot even tho they run wild in the house. If I am in the living room, they are too. They also follow me to bed.

  3. I have 2 cat towers that sit in front of a window in my living room. My cats practically live on them, so I would recommend them. However, I might consider looking at Wal-Mart or Target for a cheaper tower first to see if your cat is going to take to it. I have one that is floor to ceiling that I got at Wal-Mart for 30 dollars. Look around before investing large amounts of money in something your cat may not be interested it. Good luck!

  4. My kitties cat condo is the best money I ever spent. It has scratching posts built in and all! My kitties practically live on it. Armarkat.com has better deals than anywhere! http://www.armarkat.com/ I have the A7101.

  5. I highly recommend cat furniture to my pet families. You may encourage your cat to play in, on and scratch pet furniture… saving your human pieces.

  6. They are totally worth it. I have one and I also have one that I made myself, a littletoy that hangs and twirls around when my little Autumn bats at it.
Yes they are completely worth it!!!!!!!

  7. I bought everything I saw for my kitten. As she grew up..I bought what I thought she would like. Her favorite toy is a twist tie from the grocery store. Go figure.

  8. cats claw and like to be up on things, thats a fact. scratching posts, kitty condos/trees are definately worth the money. some cats dont like the enclosed areas of the condos and some do, so you will have to determine which your kitty likes. i stick with the trees myself. just remember cats like a well used scratching post so when it becomes worn and shredded looking dont replace it. the trees and such will also help with training the cats to stay off of places you dont want them (counters, bookshelves, etc), because they have their own place to get up on

  9. I would definitely recommend a cat tree. I have one that has 3 round beds in it and all of my cats use it. It doubles as a scratch post so that will also help to save your furniture. My cats love to also run up the tree and perch on the very top post (talk about a sense of balance!) Try to find one with toys attached to it as well. Or you can just use the toys on a string and wrap them around it. Believe it or not, my cats' favorite type of bed is one of those small playpens (the ones for dolls) that you can get for around $10.00. Sometimes you can find them at second hand stores even cheaper. When in doubt or debt, an old empty box works just as well. Good luck with your new baby!

  10. Oh yeah they are, but don't buy from that site. You can buy from Wal Mart,Target,KMart,Pet Co, etc. I have 1 very spoiled, very happy cat. She has mulitple toys-balls,mice,squeaky toys etc. She has a kitty "condo" thingy I bought for 20$ @wal mart. It's cool, my cat loves it…She also has a kitty cube that her toys are in. She is happy Im happy it works..lol..She also loves empty boxes and laundry baskets.

  11. I have a three year old cat and I bought him a little play house, a scratching post and a hammock. He loves all of it. He sleeps in his house at night, he actually uses his scratching post and not my furniture, and he loves to be rocked in his hammock. Not all cats are the same but I highly recommend it. It keeps my baby out of trouble.

  12. I have two cat trees with several platforms and an enclosed room in one of the trees and both of my cats stay in them all the time since there in front of windows so they can see everything going on outside.

  13. In all my life I have never seen a cat happier than with a few toy mice and a box with some holes cut in it. Cats seem to get tired of the stuff pretty quickly so there really isnt any use in buying it. A scratching post will be a good investment but the toy houses and stuff like that are a waste of money.

  14. Most of the time they're not. But a cat tree they can climb on has been a good investment for us. Playpens, condos, hammocks and beds were never used.
