“Hi. Looking around at cat furniture, cat condos, and scratching posts, I notice that some have mostly or all carpet, and some have mostly or all sisal rope. Which is better?”
The carpet wears out quicker than sisal. Go for the sisal. Cats really don’t care what they scratch as much as we think. Mine love their sisal post. Good luck!

Hello bluesy! Carpet is probably not your best option because your cat will learn to scratch on carpet. If you have carpet in your home, he may scratch that, too. Sisal rope is a surface that my cats have preferred. They can really get their claws into it, and it can help them to pull off the dead part of the claws (sheaths). Also, sisal rope will last much longer than carpet. Plus, you'll be cleaning up carpet fibers endlessly if you get a carpeted tree. A search for sisal rope cat scratchers here on Yahoo! should turn up some reasonable vendors for this type of thing.

Mine prefer sisal and I think it helps them distinguish between the places they are allowed to scratch and the places they are not allowed to scratch.
